Dirt Road Days

The days are getting shorter, there was a chill in the air yesterday morning, and our favorite time of year is here!  Who was in deer/bear camp on Saturday morning?  We are sure that most of you made it out for the season opener this past weekend.  Unfortunately work commitments kept the DRD staff out of the field.  Several Friends of DRD had good opening weekends though.  It sounds like this year looks more promising than the last several.

The state released its deer forecast and rut calendar.  Expectations are high this season from both the state and hunters.  After the 2012 season being a let down, there is a feeling of hope in 2013.  Adjustments made to the regulations and just the newness of the year gives us all hope.  If you haven’t seen it yet, check out the video the state released regarding the 2013 deer forecast at www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmuK_ILNsbs

Even better, the bear reports are promising.  Although the heavy rains have disrupted the acorn crop this year, hunters are still finding bears.  The acorn crop usually has a direct effect on bear sightings.  For some reason, the bears haven’t scattered yet the way they normally do during a poor acorn crop.  Take advantage of the early season opportunities before the game scatters looking for food.

The staff of DRD heads to camp this coming weekend and hope to run into some of you in the field and can’t wait to share our pictures and stories.  We would love to see your pictures enjoying the dirt road days.  Send them to dirtroaddispatch@ymail.com and we will add them to the Friends of DRD page!!!
