Live Report from the Field – 11/15/13

Today I have decided to hunt a tougher area. It is very thick and has limited shooting lanes especially for a bow hunter. Why am I here? Well for one the deer haven’t been where I have been all season. I decided that being able to see for 50-100 yards whether in pines or hardwoods was overrated at this point in the season. Therefore, today I am hunting a thicket.

The good news is that there more active signs in here than most of other places I have hunted. In a short check of the area I have found 2 scrapes and a rub. Since I got a late start today I decided not to contaminate the area and set up in the thicket.

So far doves and songbirds are the only things I have seen but hopes are high as we head towards dark. Updates to follow of there is any new news.

Live Reports from the Field – 11/13/13

We are trying something new starting today – Live Reports from the Field. Hopefully these reports will get you as excited as we are to get in the field…

A major cold front swept through the area last night creating a great day to be in the woods today. I was the fortunate person from DRD that didn’t have to work today and got to hunt. I got a late start and didn’t get in the woods until 9:30 am. On the way here, I did spot groups of 7 and 4 deer feeding in two different locations. That was a promising sign.

It has been a difficult deer season for us. Still not seeing a lot of deer while hunting but even more discouraging is the lack of deer that we are moving while get to and from our stands.

There has been much more positive feedback regarding this season but we haven’t seen a huge change in the northern zone this season.

Although the season has been slow for DRD and their friends, we still encourage everyone to put the time in the field. We may not be seeing much from the tree, but you certainly can’t see anything from the couch or office chair.

Even the squirrels have quieted at the moment, but I will be patient and see if anything will come through between now and dark. Updates to follow if they do…

November 11, 2013

Well, we know that we haven’t been updating DRD much lately and for that we apologize.  It is the time of year to spend as many hours as possible in the field and that doesn’t leave a lot of time for updating the website.  Over the next several days we will try to update our activities.  Here are the highlights before you get the stories…

DRD traveled to the Badger State in October for grouse and woodcock hunting.  Although the locals stated that the woodcock big flight wasn’t in yet, it was one of best years that we have experienced.  Fantastic dog work made the experience even better.  Grouse numbers were definitely down from prior years, but was still excellent.

Since returning, we have spent many days in the woods deer hunting.  Our season has been very slow so far, but across the state feedback has been much better than previous years.  Although we still believe that the state needs to adjust its plans for the future.  Great strides were made this year with reduced doe days, coyote quota hunts, and state-wide open forum meetings; there is still more work to be done.

Please be sure to either attend one of the meetings that are being held currently across the state or electronically submit your thoughts to the state.  Many of the comments we are hearing is that we wish Georgia would control their deer population much like Kentucky or Illinois.  This can and should be achieved with a little effort from the outdoorsmen and women of Georgia reaching out to those that can make these changes.

Stay in the woods, good luck and be safe!!!

Deer Season Under Way – Late October

Deer Season is well under way and feedback across the state is much better than last season.  There are good results being reported across the state.  More sightings, good buck kills, and coyotes being eliminated are all being reported from the field.

The acorn crop is seriously reduced this year with the high rainfall totals from earlier this year.  The common report is that if you find the acorns, you will find deer this year.  Most of the deer we have been seeing are located directly under oaks that are producing.  They are feeding throughout the day as well.

It is a great start to the season and hope that these results last all season long!  Good luck and be safe out there!!!

Time to get out and hunt Georgia!

We are back from our bird hunting adventures in the Great North Woods, but those stories will need to hold off a few days.  Have you looked at your calendar?  It is that time of year again!  It’s time to get out and hunt!  Some new seasons are even open right now so there are plenty of opportunities this time of year.

Georgia started it’s first October Goose Season this year.  With such a large resident flock of geese in Georgia, this October season offers us an opportunity to take some birds at a time of year that we normally can’t.  There are very few migrants this time of year so this season can be challenging.  It will be more about being in the right location than decoys and good calling.  This extra season is a nice bonus for Georgia, so make sure that you get out and support it.

Also, Saturday marks opening day of Modern Firearms Deer Season.  Be sure to check out the either sex days for your area as they have been reduced for most of the state this year.  Georgia hunters have the benefit of one of the longest firearms season in the country.  We have had our struggles the last few years with the deer population, but state biologists are confident that this is a good year for us.  Saturday is a lot like Christmas Day for deer hunters.  They wait all year and then can’t sleep the night before.  It is an exciting time of year for outdoorsmen across the state.

Check your regs, pull out your orange, and get ready to head into the woods!  Please share your stories with us at dirtroaddispatch@ymail.com.  If your story is chosen as a post, you will win a $25 Bass Pro Shops gift card!!!  Have a safe season and good luck to all this season!!!

Annual Sarah’s Creek Hunt

DRD returned last week from it’s annual archery hunt at Sarah’s Creek.  After a great year last year, there was fear of a letdown this year, but we definitely weren’t disappointed.  We arrived late in the day and set up camp immediately which gave us time to head to the mountains to get in a late hunt.  There wasn’t a lot of daylight left, but we were more looking for sign.  What we did find was a lot of leaves left on the trees for this time of year and very few acorns falling.  We headed back to camp just after dark and had a good dinner and then went to bed.

The alarm went off at O-Dark Thirty, but we were already awake.  We got dressed and drove up the mountain.  We didn’t exactly have a plan other than to head down the trail and just put in miles.  Light started to break through the trees shortly after we arrived, but once again we found too many leaves and no acorns.  We walked a few miles and glassed the hillsides.  There was a lot of sign, but we couldn’t not spot any deer or bears.

After a late breakfast, we headed to a new spot to check a higher elevations for the afternoon.  We split up by a few hundred yards and worked our way up the trail, once again taking our time and glassing.  There was sign everywhere and just too many leaves to spot anything.  We even crossed very fresh scat on the trail at one point but never could see the bear.  After three miles, we arrived at a large wildlife opening that gave you a beautiful view of the mountain.  We took numerous pictures on the beautiful fall afternoon.  It made the walk worthwhile, but we were getting frustrated that we weren’t seeing anything with this much sign.  We hiked back down and decided it was time for a break.

After a much needed lunch and soaking our feet in the cold water pools of the creek, we cleaned up camp and headed back to the mountain for an evening hunt.  This area was torn to shreds by hogs.  We decided with two hours until the end of legal shooting time to split up and hunt until dark.  One person took the clover field and the other person took the hardwoods several hundred yards away.  In the clover field at sunset, three deer entered the field at about 30 yards.  Unfortunately, a limb snuck up and deflected the arrow causing a miss.  A 45 yard follow up shot proved unsuccessful as well.  Back in the woods, things got interesting on the walk out encountering a small bear at 15 yards.  Unfortunately, it was too dark to see the pins on the bow and the bear decided there were better places to be and exited the trail at full run speed.  A very exciting evening hunt rejuvenated the hunters for the next morning.

Once again, we were awake before the alarms went off and were in the woods well ahead of daylight.  Nothing was cooperating that morning though.  Even our turkey friends that we had bumped into all week were not to be found.  After a late breakfast and taking time to load the truck, we decided on two more short hunts before heading home.  Once again we found a lot of sign, but did not get anymore opportunities.

The weather was perfect with brilliant sunshine each day and cool nights followed by warm days.  Fortunately this year the only accident was a melted sole of a boot that must have gotten a little close to the campfire.  Otherwise the trip was great!

We always recommend getting out and exploring the great areas of Georgia to hunt.  It is even better when you can take a few days and just spend them minus TVs, cell phones, and traffic.  Pull your boots on get outdoors!!!

National Fishing and Hunting Day

Tomorrow is National Fishing and Hunting Day!  It is time to get out and celebrate all of the things we love!  Hiking, fishing, canoeing, hunting, camping and just the outdoors in general.

Georgia is offering tomorrow Saturday September 28th, 2013 as a free fishing day.  Take advantage of a day that you won’t need a fishing license and go fishing.  Many of the state parks have fishing gear for rent if you don’t have any of your own.

These are great days to take rookies and expose them to the things we love!  Get out tomorrow and enjoy this beautiful weekend!!!

Dirt Road Days

The days are getting shorter, there was a chill in the air yesterday morning, and our favorite time of year is here!  Who was in deer/bear camp on Saturday morning?  We are sure that most of you made it out for the season opener this past weekend.  Unfortunately work commitments kept the DRD staff out of the field.  Several Friends of DRD had good opening weekends though.  It sounds like this year looks more promising than the last several.

The state released its deer forecast and rut calendar.  Expectations are high this season from both the state and hunters.  After the 2012 season being a let down, there is a feeling of hope in 2013.  Adjustments made to the regulations and just the newness of the year gives us all hope.  If you haven’t seen it yet, check out the video the state released regarding the 2013 deer forecast at www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmuK_ILNsbs

Even better, the bear reports are promising.  Although the heavy rains have disrupted the acorn crop this year, hunters are still finding bears.  The acorn crop usually has a direct effect on bear sightings.  For some reason, the bears haven’t scattered yet the way they normally do during a poor acorn crop.  Take advantage of the early season opportunities before the game scatters looking for food.

The staff of DRD heads to camp this coming weekend and hope to run into some of you in the field and can’t wait to share our pictures and stories.  We would love to see your pictures enjoying the dirt road days.  Send them to dirtroaddispatch@ymail.com and we will add them to the Friends of DRD page!!!

Opening Day- Dawson Forest WMA Dove Field

We hope that everyone had an excellent opening day!  DRD staff spent opening day at Dawson Forest WMA Dove Field.  The field had a great turnout and most people acted responsibly throughout the entire day.  The field was rated by Georgia DNR as “good” and for a lot of hunters it was.  There were several areas of the field that remained active all afternoon, but at 4 pm it got really exciting.  Birds were coming from most directions and more of the hunters were able to get in some shooting.  We would say that the hunt rated “fair” for most and “good” for everyone else.

It was excellent to see so many juniors in the field.  Although many left early or came in late, at least they were exposed to the fun and excitement of the outdoors.  We do encourage parents to teach their children basic firearms safety though.  There were a few moments throughout the day that made several other hunters in the field nervous.  It is great to see the youth in the field, but let’s be sure to do our part as well.

Other than a few hunters shooting at some long range birds, the rest of the day was great for a public hunt.  Very little shooting at low birds or arguing over killed birds.  Overall it was a very enjoyable hunt.

It was great to see so many people in the field and hope that you get out the next two Saturdays!
