DRD’s Proposed Changes to Georgia Deer Seasons

Dirt Road Dispatch’s proposal for the 2013 deer season is as follows:
*Leave current 12 deer limit in place for the entire state. Also leave the 10 doe, 1 buck and 1 quality buck limit in place.
*Put in place a check system for all harvested deer. Whether a website and/or a call in system, require hunters to register their deer within 48 hours of the kill. This will allow for a more accurate record of the yearly harvest. Questions should include but are not limited to: License Number, Buck or Doe, Number of Points (if Antlered), and Region Harvested. A season end survey similar to the current HIP registration should also be required each season with average daily deer spotted as a question.
*Add youth modern weapons dates throughout the season.
*The current North and South Zone be converted into seven regions based off of the current region map. Seasons lengths to be based off of the zones as listed below.
Region 1
Archery- September 7th – October 4th & November 25th – December 31st
Primitive- October 5th – October 18th
Modern Weapons- October 19th – November 24th

Modern Weapons- November 3rd – December 29th

Along with region changes, we encourage major changes to the current coyote regulations. Coyotes are one of the top threats to Georgia’s deer population. Quota night coyote hunts and full year day time hunting with limited restrictions on weapons. Deer hunters across the state need to do their part and reduce the number of these predators that they have in their regions.

Of course, we trust and encourage the state’s biologist to adjust the recommendations. The current 10 year plan expires in 2014 and we support changes to keep the trophy deer population as one of the best in the country, but also allow hunters to see deer throughout the season. The model proposed above is similar to one used in several other states with proven success. We do not support another 10 year plan that could end up detrimental to the overall deer population. Any plans need to be re-evaluated after 3 years and changes made if necessary. Please support the state in implementing changes to the hunting seasons that will improve the health and quality of our deer population.

Mini-flight for Georgia

Attention Duck Hunters!!! Take some time to get out on the water. Over the last week, we are starting to see the first mini-flight of the season. Unfortunately we are into the second week of January, but more ducks are here than have been here all season. Reports from the field have been extremely positive and while scouting a large pond yesterday, we saw the most ducks we have seen in 4 years. Woodies, mallards, gadwall, and divers were all pouring in towards and after dark. A week ago at the same pond, only 5 ducks were seen. With the season winding down quickly, this may be the best we will see. We have been waiting for ducks and the cold weather that pushed across the midwest and northeast after Christmas has finally forced some ducks towards us.

We would still recommend small decoy spreads and limited calling. With duck hunters at an all time high, the ducks are more educated than ever. Hunting is challenging with crowded lakes and rookie hunters experimenting with their new calls. It is nice to see growth in the sport and experienced hunters are going to have to get creative. It makes all hunters better and makes the sport more fun. Take time to help a rookie hunter and enjoy the mini-flight that has arrived!

Tallulah Gorge State Park

Tallulah Gorge State Park is an amazing canyon in northeast Georgia. Located just off of 441 north of I-985, The Gorge is easily accessible by travelers. Once entering the park, you will find yourself at the Jane Hurt Yarn Interpretive Center. Inside the center are exhibits that show the wildlife found in the area. There is also a film that you can watch about The Gorge along with restrooms and a gift shop.

There are several different hiking trails. The most popular trails are the North Rim, South Rim and the Hurricane Falls trails. There are several other trails available for hiking and mountain biking. Restrictive use times and permits are required for many of the other trails, so please check with the Interpretive Center before utilizing other trails.

The North and South Rim trails lead to 10 overlooks of The Gorge. Rated moderate, this trail is an excellent marked trail with beautiful views. This trail has a lot of options to turn around and go back, which makes it a great trail for beginner or novice hikers.

The Hurricane Falls trail is a challenging trail that follows over 1000 stairs with a suspension bridge crossing The Gorge. This trail is rated difficult and should not be attempted by beginner hikers or those with health issues. This hike is part of the Georgia State Canyon Climbers Club and will provide a challenge for all hikers.

Tallulah Gorge is worth hiking all seasons and many times to get the full experience of all the trails.

Mid-Season Duck Scouting

With all the cold fronts moving through the entire country, I took some time to scout new areas tonight for ducks. I headed over to Dawson Forest to check the wetlands, waterfowl refuge, and scout for swamps. We walked several miles and found a fair amount of bear scat throughout the trails. I would think that they would be hibernating by now, but may still be too warm. On the 3+ mile walk, we saw squirrels, a turkey, and the dog chased a deer. The area was beautiful with tall hardwoods and pines. Unfortunately, all the back creek areas and wetlands have dried up in the drought. Even with the significant rainfall from last night, they were dry.

Just before dark, we headed over to the waterfowl refuge pond. We got back there about 30 minutes before dark. We walked down to the waterfowl viewing blind. We sat down in the blind and scanned the pond with the binoculars. It was very overcast and difficult to see. The wind was blowing snow flurries. Across the pond, I saw some movement. Looking through the binoculars, I saw a small flock of wood ducks. They continued to swim around the back side of the pond and down towards the creek. The wind picked up and a familiar sound came through the blind. It was a snow/sleet mix hitting the aluminum roof and splashing in the pond. Right at dark, they let out their calls which sound like a cry, but no other birds landed on the pond. Snow was blowing hard at this point, although it was far to warm to stick.

No geese or big ducks yet, but with the temperatures across the country dropping, they will be here before long. Keep scouting and be ready when they get here.

Late Season WMA Deer Hunts

Just a quick reminder…late season WMA Deer hunts re-open on Wednesday, December 26th.  Check your regulations for end dates and areas that re-open.

Late season deer hunts can be very exciting.  Although some bucks have begun to lose their antlers, others are still chasing does.  Georgia’s rut often is very late in the season and many quality deer have been killed in the last few weeks.  Depending on the weather, late season hunts are a different style than early season hunts.  Most late season hunters are not trophy hunters.  This is the time to put meat in the freezer.  Deer at this point in the season will be moving in larger groups and with the “December break” in hunting, won’t be as skittish as they were four weeks ago.  The bucks will be tired and less alert due to running does for so long.  The normal rules still apply with paying attention to the wind and covering up your scent, but you can get away with much more than early season.

Most states only have a late season for archery hunters.  In those states, hunters take advantage of the last few days to bow hunt does and get practice and experience to end the season.  Georgia does have a late gun season and many hunters take advantage of it.  Enjoy the last few days before the season ends in the north zone.  You can’t see deer sitting on your couch!

First Day of Winter

The first day of winter will finally feel seasonally correct!  A major cold front has swept through most of the country bringing blizzard conditions to much of the Midwest and sweeping cold, windy weather through the South.  This is the break that many of us have waited for.  Weather like this will push migratory birds around.  Instead of hunting local birds, we will finally see some new birds over the next few days.

Snow covered fields in the Midwest will force even the hardiest of birds to move south below the snow line.  If this front locks in over the next week or so, we could experience the best push of birds in over 3 years.  Fronts arriving this early in the season often can be a good sign for the remainder of the season.  Although much of the country has seen unseasonably warm temps so far, the predictions still call for colder weather.  With Christmas right around the corner, it will be challenging to find time to get out.  Hopefully, this is the beginning of a great season though.  If you do get out, be safe.  These colder temps and high winds are when accidents happen.  Be prepared for the worst situations, as this is when hypothermia and frost bite occur.

Good luck and be safe as the duck season finally gets started!!!

Weather Changes

After spending three days of scouting with the windows down on the truck, the front finally came through this afternoon. We received some rain and thunder. Thunder on December 10th? Well, it has been a strange season so far, so why not? Colder temps have moved into the area and hopefully we will begin to see some activity. Be on the lookout for woodcock, doves, and some waterfowl moving into the area.

Today was the first day in three weeks that significant doves were noticed back in the area. Reports are coming in about limited woodcock moving into the area. Although we are not in an area of the country to attracts large numbers of woodcock, we do get a share. You should find them around the swamps and moist brushy areas.

With all of our winter seasons now open or over, take advantage of this weather change to get into the field for a few days. Don’t forget to check your local regulations regarding limits or closed areas as there are many now.

Dawson Forest WMA Early Ducks

Dawson Forest has waterfowl impoundment behind the horse camp.  This area can give you an early indication on whether there are ducks in the area.  The state has done a wonderful job with this area.  It has a waterfowl viewing blind that is easily accessible from the trail.  There is a nice bench inside that allows probably 20+ people to sit down.  The pond has wood duck boxes scattered across it.  Although it is in the foothills of the mountains, it is an area that looks “ducky.”  Tonight’s sunset over the impoundment was beautiful.

You are not allowed to hunt this area, but gives you an idea of what to expect.  There are areas to duck hunt in Dawson Forest WMA, but many of these are dried up for now with the return of the drought.  The only bird seen tonight was a Great Blue Heron, who came in at dark.  It came from south of the pond and made a spectacular move falling out of the sky to land on the close side of the pond.  A little bear scat was found along the trail as well, but with only 3 days left in the season this find was not helpful.  With duck season opening in one day, I wouldn’t rush to the ponds, rivers, or swamps.  Unless you have a stock of wood ducks somewhere, go hiking or scouting for new locations.  It looks like it will be a slow start to duck season for Georgia.

Record Warm Temps

After back to back days of record temperatures in Georgia, it makes it hard to think about hunting.  We don’t recommend fishing in the month of December, but with these temps it is hard to not think about fishing.  Fortunately for us a front should come through next week and should lower the temps right after more seasons begin to open.  Woodcock season opened and the late duck season opens Saturday.  It will take a while for us to start seeing birds, but at least we are headed the right direction.

If you do head out fishing this time of year, remember that we have had some cooler temps and the fish will react that way.  They will be deeper and react slower than during the warm months.  Bass fishing can be good this time of year with jigs and slow-moving spinnerbaits.  It is still warm enough to use buzzbaits as well.  Crappie are also a good bet this time of year.  Find the areas of the lake with flooded timber.  Drop jigs straight down next to the tree with a minnow on the jig.  Read your regs carefully though.  Crappie limits vary from area to area, but are worth bringing home and deep-frying!

Even if you don’t get out hunting or fishing, take advantage or the warm temps and sneak out for a short afternoon hike with the family!

Only 2 Deer Days left in early Redlands Season

With two days remaining and the weather turning warmer, Redlands WMA does not look to have a promising end to the early season.  Many hunters have had success with several quality bucks taken during the middle of November.  Lately more does have been taken than anything.  The number of hunters dropped off during Thanksgiving week.  Hopefully hunters get out and take advantage of the last two days even though the weather is too warm.  If you can’t get out, don’t forget after the December break that there is one week left in the season at Redlands.  Otherwise, it will be time to look for other areas or other game to chase.  Good luck!!!
