Sarah’s Creek 2014

The Annual DRD trip to Sarah’s Creek took place the end of September.  If you have read from the previous years you know, the purpose of the trip is to bow hunt the early part of the deer and bear season in the northeast Georgia mountains.  We arrived late afternoon to set up camp.  A little rain the first evening did not deter us from hunting.  There was a little sign, but after setting up camp hunting hours were limited before dark. Leaves were starting to change, but none had fallen yet.  What was amazing was the mast crop, especially after last year.  There were acorns EVERYWHERE!  At one point we discussed sitting down and seeing how far down the mountain we could slide on them.  It was like walking on marbles.  This made the hunting very challenging versus other years.  The deer and bears were not out roaming the mountains so intercepting them was next to impossible.  In talking with other hunters, this was the case for most this year.

We still hunted hard for three days.  The weather ended up being warm but beautiful.  We found very little sign and only saw turkeys.  Although it wasn’t successful this year, it turned out to be another great trip to Sarah’s Creek.  We highly recommend spending time there given the opportunity.  Most people won’t hunt the area due to the steep terrain, so you often have the area to yourself.  It is challenging and anyone hunting there should be in moderately good condition.  Regardless, the views are amazing, there is limited-no cell signal, and the campsites are clean.  We start counting down the days to the next year’s hunt as soon as we leave Sarah’s Creek.

2014 Early Season Report

It has been a busy start to the hunting season for the staff of DRD.  With several hunting trips completed, we are settling into the Georgia late seasons now.  We will discuss the early season trips in posts over the next few weeks, but tonight we will update from feedback we are receiving this season.

Many reports from hunters across the state for this year’s deer season has been far more positive than previous years.  Many areas are describing higher deer populations and lots of young deer.  Obviously it is too early to note if the changes in 2013’s reduced doe days had a positive effect, but the feedback has been good.

We also have heard reports of more quality deer being killed statewide.  This also is a positive sign towards the health of the deer population.  The one negative that we are hearing though is the high number of coyotes.  The coyote population is booming and this is not a positive towards any of the game populations.  The coyotes directly attribute to game bird, turkey, and deer population declines.  Please do your part by eliminating coyotes as you see them.

The dove season was very positive across most areas.  Local birds had not moved on yet and there were quite a few migratory birds already here.  We have not received many reports about the early duck and goose seasons.  Hopefully we can provide more information once the regular season opens.

The mountain reports have been far from positive this fall.  The bear hunting has been extremely challenging due to the huge mast crop from this year.  There are food sources everywhere which is making it difficult to find bears since they are not having to climb to get food.  Also, the grouse numbers seem to be discouraging again this year.  We are in need of some cutting to help the create some progressive growth forests.

We look forward to hearing from everyone as the season progresses.  Please feel free to email us a dirtroaddispatch@gmail.com!

Check back often for reports from our travels!!!

Opening Day of Dove Season – 2014 Review

We hope everyone had a great opening day!  The weather was a typical opening day in Georgia, hot and sunny.  A few late day storms passed through, but for the most part didn’t ruin too many hunts.  With the consistent weather, birds were plentiful at most of the hunts!

Our hunt was an excellent experience.  We participated in a North Georgia hunt over millet.  The field provided and excellent lunch, a fair way to pick spots, and the most birds we have seen in several years.

We also had a great experience with a DNR Ranger, Ranger Elrod.  He was professional, friendly, and timely.  I have found it frustrating over the years when a Ranger comes to check licenses and they tie you up for 15 or more minutes while you are missing out on hunting time.  They have an extremely challenging job and we all should respect that.  It is so much easier to respect the jobs they are doing when they do it so efficiently.

Overall it was an outstanding opening day.  There are more seasons opening over the next few weeks so if you haven’t yet, it is time to get out and start your season!!!

2014 Opening Day of Dove Season – Georgia

The 2014 Dove Season is quickly approaching.  After a long 7 month wait, the unofficial start to the fall hunting season is less than two days away.  Hopefully everyone has planned and prepared for the start of the seasons.  Georgia’s seasons start very quickly.  Dove season opens on September 6th along with the Early Goose Season.  The following weekend the archery seasons for deer and bear open across much of the state and the early teal season opens the same day.  Before we know it, October will be here and the upland bird seasons and modern firearms deer season will be upon us.  Here are few things to remember as you take field on Saturday.

*Our HIP permit has expired.  Unlike our hunting licenses in GA that expire one year from the date of purchase, the HIP permit expires in February each year.  Please make sure you get a new one for either goose hunting or dove hunting.  It is required.

*If you are planning on hunting a WMA, be sure to purchase a WMA License.  At $19.00 a year, it is an excellent value for having access to nearly one million acres of public hunting land.

*We recommend the Sportsman License.  $55.00 per year and it covers everything that most of us do.  You will still need to pick up your Federal Waterfowl Stamp from the post office, but there isn’t much else you will need after that.

So you have purchased all your licenses and are legal to head into the field on Saturday.  It is early season so don’t forget a few of the essentials that we don’t need later in the season.  Bug spray and sun screen are necessities in the September heat.  It is also important to bring plenty of water along as well.  Our Georgia heat is nothing to mess around with so please drink plenty of fluids.  For safety in the dove field, bring along safety glasses or sunglasses, a hat, and possibly ear protection.  Even in the safest of shoots with no one shooting low birds, you will get “rained on” with shot at some point.  Don’t look up when you hear the pellets start falling!

We hope everyone has a safe and fun start to the season!  If you have the chance, take a beginner hunting and introduce them to the sport!  And when you are done, don’t forget to grill up those doves have enjoy the results of your great day in the field!!!

Georgia Ten Year Deer Plan

It is time for Georgia to put together the 10 year deer plan.  Georgia DNR and WRD have put the proposal for the 2015-2024 Deer Management Plan for public comment.  The report can be found at http://www.georgiawildlife.com/hunting/game-management.  It is important that each person interested in the deer population for Georgia to review this plan and comment at the public meetings or by contacting your local office.  Local meetings take place August 18th – 21st.

Most of the proposals are based off of suggestions by the public and supported by the biologists of the state.  DRD supports most of the proposals with the exception of one.  We oppose the discussion of statewide deer season and ending zones.  Just because we are all Georgia does not mean that the entire state should be treated the same.  There are seven distinctive zones for the state of Georgia and the regulations need to recognize that.

All other proposals are solid and supported by DRD.

Although the document is long (99 pages), we suggest that all hunters at least skim through the proposal.  It was disappointing to see the lack of feedback that was submitted to the state.  We read the hunting forums and know that the hunters of Georgia are outspoken!  Don’t hide behind your screen names and get out there and tell the state how you feel!!!

Quiet Spring

Unfortunately, the DRD staff have had a quiet spring.  Work and life have kept us off the water and out of the woods.  When we have made it out, it has been impossible to post.  We encourage everyone to make time for the outdoors and check out some of our friends websites.  Georgia State Parks have plenty of activities going on and with summer kicking off be sure to check out their information.  Also, DNR is working hard to get our fields ready for opening days which are just over 3 months away.

Take time to go fishing and start planning your fall.  We will see you on the water this summer!!!

Pre-Season Turkey 2014

Unfortunately, real jobs have kept us from posting recently, but it doesn’t mean we aren’t thinking about the outdoors.  All of the small game seasons ended last week, but turkey season is right around the corner along with spring fishing.  Over the last two weeks, we have been observing a large flock of turkeys.  There is a large tom with this flock that doesn’t have any desire to leave what he has.  Each morning he is in full strut circling his flock.  It has been very impressive to watch.  We have tried a few calls from the road to see if we can get him to gobble with no luck.  Keep your eyes peeled though.  We are less than two weeks from opening day and with some warm weather in the forecast it should get them riled up.

Once again this year, Wildlife Resources Division is co-hosting “Give it a Shot” shotgun patterning days.  This Saturday from 10 am – 2:00 pm you will be able to test different chokes and shells at Wilson Shoals WMA.  This is a well hosted fun event.  We hope to see everyone there!

No matter how busy you find yourself, try to always make some time for the outdoors.  It helps relieve stress and can make you happier!  Get Dirt Roadin’ Georgia!

End of Duck Season

The 2013-2014 Duck Season wrapped up yesterday.  For most everyone, this turned out to be an outstanding season.  The severe cold weather, aka 2014 polar vortex, pushed the ducks down for the first time in several seasons.  Not only did many areas get more ducks than previous seasons, we also saw different species than we have seen in a long time.  Locally, reports included: mallards, gadwall, widgeon, canvasbacks, redheads, pintails, mergansers, buffleheads, ringnecks, teal and of course Georgia’s most popular wood ducks just to mention a few.  Some sea ducks were also reported killed inland.

Our season wrapped up well with a great day on a local lake.  Other than some mid day wind, the day was warmer with just enough cloud cover.  Ducks were moving well all day but the majority of the birds moved between 4:30 – 5:30 pm.  The birds worked well and our decoy spread must have been the best of the season.  With ducks landing in the decoys throughout the day, it made for a fun finale!

There are still options with duck season closing.  Many small game opportunities are still open until the end of February and fishing will start picking up over the next month as well.  Worst case – Turkey season opens in 47 days and it is only 221 until dove season opens and we get to start all over!!!

6 Days Left in Duck Season

There is less than a week left in duck season and the weather is cooperating perfectly!  Although no one other than duck hunters are thrilled with this forecast, we have another stretch of good cold weather to keep the birds moving.  The cold weather and the snow cover has moved a lot of ducks into the southern states.

Unfortunately, high water levels has made duck hunting in Georgia very difficult.  Many of the rivers, creeks and swamps have swollen well beyond their banks creating back water sloughs and flooded timber.  With more water available, ducks are spread across the areas.  This is making it difficult to find the large groups.  Further north, as areas freeze it locks all the ducks into smaller areas and often gives you opportunities at large groups.  The good news is with the ducks still being paired up and small flocks, you don’t need as many decoys.  The hunters hunting in the northern states are having to put out large decoy spreads.

We were asked a question last week- “Is it okay to leave your decoys out?”  In the major flyways, the hunters will leave out their decoys for the majority of the season.  If you are getting new birds in your area on a regular basis, then absolutely leave them out.  If you are hunting mostly local birds or birds that have been in the area for more than a week, then we don’t recommend leaving out your decoys for more than a day at a time.

The last thing we want to remind everyone is to be safe while duck hunting.  There have been several hunting accidents this year that included a Georgia duck hunter drowning.  Remember our ice for the most part is not safe to walk across in Georgia.  Also, wind is not something to mess with in any situation.  Obviously, depending on your boat size or if you walk in hunt, you can handle more or less wind.  Just watch the constant changing weather at these cold temps and very windy days.  We want everyone to have a good time, but still go home to their families!

Update 1-14-2014

Duck Hunting MorningHappy New Year from DRD!!!  We realize that it has been over a month since our last post and for that we apologize.  Over the last month, we have been in the field and on the water, but with holidays, illness, and work, we haven’t had time to update the website.  We still intend to post a final review of the RBR Quota hunt and the 2013 Deer Season, so be on the lookout for those.

With deer season over in the northern zone and closing tomorrow in the southern zone, there are still plenty of hunting options.  Most small game seasons are still open and of course duck season.  Our focus has been duck season.  With the recent cold snaps, there have been more and more ducks moving into the area.  We are seeing some divers arrive and of course, Georgia always has Wood Ducks.  Many Georgia hunters are taking advantage of the coldest weather in over two decades to see ducks that we don’t normally get in this area.  It is causing us to pull out all the stops with additional decoys, new calls, and hunting longer hours.

With less than two weeks left in duck season, don’t wait to go.  We have some more great duck hunting weather in the forecast.  Get out early, hunt late, and spend time on the water right now.  Hopefully we will have some great stories to tell you over the next couple of weeks.
