We hope that everyone had an excellent opening day! DRD staff spent opening day at Dawson Forest WMA Dove Field. The field had a great turnout and most people acted responsibly throughout the entire day. The field was rated by Georgia DNR as “good” and for a lot of hunters it was. There were several areas of the field that remained active all afternoon, but at 4 pm it got really exciting. Birds were coming from most directions and more of the hunters were able to get in some shooting. We would say that the hunt rated “fair” for most and “good” for everyone else.
It was excellent to see so many juniors in the field. Although many left early or came in late, at least they were exposed to the fun and excitement of the outdoors. We do encourage parents to teach their children basic firearms safety though. There were a few moments throughout the day that made several other hunters in the field nervous. It is great to see the youth in the field, but let’s be sure to do our part as well.
Other than a few hunters shooting at some long range birds, the rest of the day was great for a public hunt. Very little shooting at low birds or arguing over killed birds. Overall it was a very enjoyable hunt.
It was great to see so many people in the field and hope that you get out the next two Saturdays!
