National Fishing and Hunting Day

Tomorrow is National Fishing and Hunting Day!  It is time to get out and celebrate all of the things we love!  Hiking, fishing, canoeing, hunting, camping and just the outdoors in general.

Georgia is offering tomorrow Saturday September 28th, 2013 as a free fishing day.  Take advantage of a day that you won’t need a fishing license and go fishing.  Many of the state parks have fishing gear for rent if you don’t have any of your own.

These are great days to take rookies and expose them to the things we love!  Get out tomorrow and enjoy this beautiful weekend!!!

Dirt Road Days

The days are getting shorter, there was a chill in the air yesterday morning, and our favorite time of year is here!  Who was in deer/bear camp on Saturday morning?  We are sure that most of you made it out for the season opener this past weekend.  Unfortunately work commitments kept the DRD staff out of the field.  Several Friends of DRD had good opening weekends though.  It sounds like this year looks more promising than the last several.

The state released its deer forecast and rut calendar.  Expectations are high this season from both the state and hunters.  After the 2012 season being a let down, there is a feeling of hope in 2013.  Adjustments made to the regulations and just the newness of the year gives us all hope.  If you haven’t seen it yet, check out the video the state released regarding the 2013 deer forecast at www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmuK_ILNsbs

Even better, the bear reports are promising.  Although the heavy rains have disrupted the acorn crop this year, hunters are still finding bears.  The acorn crop usually has a direct effect on bear sightings.  For some reason, the bears haven’t scattered yet the way they normally do during a poor acorn crop.  Take advantage of the early season opportunities before the game scatters looking for food.

The staff of DRD heads to camp this coming weekend and hope to run into some of you in the field and can’t wait to share our pictures and stories.  We would love to see your pictures enjoying the dirt road days.  Send them to dirtroaddispatch@ymail.com and we will add them to the Friends of DRD page!!!

Opening Day- Dawson Forest WMA Dove Field

We hope that everyone had an excellent opening day!  DRD staff spent opening day at Dawson Forest WMA Dove Field.  The field had a great turnout and most people acted responsibly throughout the entire day.  The field was rated by Georgia DNR as “good” and for a lot of hunters it was.  There were several areas of the field that remained active all afternoon, but at 4 pm it got really exciting.  Birds were coming from most directions and more of the hunters were able to get in some shooting.  We would say that the hunt rated “fair” for most and “good” for everyone else.

It was excellent to see so many juniors in the field.  Although many left early or came in late, at least they were exposed to the fun and excitement of the outdoors.  We do encourage parents to teach their children basic firearms safety though.  There were a few moments throughout the day that made several other hunters in the field nervous.  It is great to see the youth in the field, but let’s be sure to do our part as well.

Other than a few hunters shooting at some long range birds, the rest of the day was great for a public hunt.  Very little shooting at low birds or arguing over killed birds.  Overall it was a very enjoyable hunt.

It was great to see so many people in the field and hope that you get out the next two Saturdays!

Pre-Opening Day of Dove Season

Fall is finally upon us!  It is the night before opening day of dove season.  With about 12 hours until the first guns fire rounds at the gray missiles cruising across prepared fields, hunters all across Georgia are ready for the start of the season.  They have been shooting sporting clays and buying cases of shells for weeks.  The camo is in the trucks and the shotguns are cleaned.  Everyone has checked their supply list and are ready to go!

After visiting several WMA fields, we are impressed with the work done by the State of Georgia.  We would like to thank in advance all the workers and biologists that have spent time preparing the fields.  There are plenty of opportunities for hunters all across the state to get out and hunt tomorrow.

We look forward to seeing everyone in the field and hopefully hear plenty of stories tomorrow.  Good luck, shoot straight, and be safe!!!

Dove Shoot Supply List and Getting Going!!!

With dove season opening all across the country this week and on Saturday September 7th for Georgia, it’s time put together our supply lists and get going!  As stated many times before, most people consider opening day of dove season as the kick off to hunting season.  It’s easy to forget things on the first hunt of the year and we are here to try to help you remember those items.

Some items that you have to have:  Hunting licenses including migratory permits as required by your state, shotgun plugged to hold no more than three total shells, shotgun shells, camo clothing including a hat, comfortable shoes or boots, and something to carry your birds out in.

Some items that you should have: Sunscreen, bug spray (ticks are bad again this year), ear/eye protection, plenty of water and/or sports drinks, cooler of ice (to keep your birds cool throughout the day), chair or bucket to sit on.

Some items that you might want to have: Change of clothes to travel in, snacks (it can be a long day trying to fill your limit), decoys, face mask or face paint.

If you are hunting with a dog, don’t forget to take supplies for him as well.  You will need water, shade, and a lead for your dog.

We recommend using size 7 1/2, 8, or 9 shot for dove hunting.  Larger loads are unnecessary for doves and carry significantly less pellets per shell.  Heavy powder loads are not necessary either since most hunters will need to shoot quite a few shots to reach their limit of birds.  You won’t want to be flinching from a sore shoulder late in the day.

Also, always be safe in the field.  Make sure to stay hydrated on these long hot days.  Often we are sitting in the sun for a lot of hours during dove shoots and can quickly succumb to dehydration and sun burns.  Eye protection is important since hunters are normally in all directions.  You will be sprayed with shot at some point during the shoot and protecting your eyes is very important.  On that same note, be respectful of the hunters around you and avoid shooting at low birds or birds out of range.  Most birds are killed under 30 yards, so there is no reason to take that 50 yard shot.  Most likely you won’t hit a bird at that range and you will ruin someone else’s shot.

Dove shoots are great opportunities to introduce beginners or youth to hunting.  It is a social atmosphere and they will almost always see birds which makes it exciting for beginners.  Stay close to your “apprentice” and coach them through the shots and make it fun for them.  These kind of shoots can make someone a hunter for a lifetime!

The season is almost here so get ready, have fun, and be safe!!!  See you in the field!!!
